TECH LAB 3D Printing Classes

3D Printing in the STEM Classroom (2 hours)
February 26, 2019 7:00pm - 9:00pm, $60

Are you a teacher, or homeschool parent, wondering how you can use a 3D printer to teach STEM subjects? There are many possible ways to help students visualize abstract concepts and to create experiments to explore on their own. This class will talk about some best practices and some pitfalls, and will introduce you to free online tools like the OpenSCAD design program that are particularly suited for STEM 3D models. The class will be taught by Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron, who have written two books of 3D printable science projects and are currently developing a calculus book with minimal algebra and 3D prints for key concepts.

Intermediate 3D Printing: Making Your Prints Look Amazing (2 hours)
March 5, 2019 7:00pm - 9:00pm, $60

Do you wish your 3D prints could have better surface quality, or be more translucent? Are you overwhelmed by all the latest materials choices? Are you wondering whether you can sand or paint your prints? This class will share the impact of different printer settings, tips on new materials, and post-processing techniques to help you create amazing things. Your instructors are Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron, who are working on their eighth book on 3D printing and electronics; Rich is also the designer of one of the first open-source printers. This class assumes you have done some basic experimentation already, and you are encouraged to bring problem prints to the class so the instructors can deconstruct what might have gone wrong and what could be better.

If your printer uses proprietary software, bring a laptop with that software installed and we will do our best to see how to adapt our general advice for your software.
Should be 18+ years old (adult/teacher)
Note: Because 3D printing takes a long time and because the shop printers may not be the same as yours, we do not print student projects in these classes. Rather, we focus on getting you started on your own printer.
