STEM GIRLZ: STEM CORE (8 classes)

Our girls-only classes feature the best of our science labs, only with no boys allowed! Over an 8-week block, our most popular Biology and Chemistry workshops are featured alongside a taste of our Inventor/Creator Lab, and other selected STEM subjects, including Robotics, Environmental Science, Astronomy, Paleontology, and more! We provide options for single or multiple day classes. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to cover all skill levels - so, with or without experience, students are sure to be challenged! We provide engaging hands-on activities - fostering curiosity through exploration, discovery and doing. This is at the heart of what we do to inspire future scientists.

Exploring Earth & Space

In this session, girls with an adventurous spirit can explore the world as well as journey out into our solar system! They will get to grips with geography, geology, astrophysics, engineering, chemistry, and biology, as they gain an understanding of our home planet and beyond!

Week 1:

Journey to the Center of the Earth: Students create a model of earth, showing layers to the core.

Week 2:

Rocks and Minerals: Students analyze and identify different types of rocks and minerals.

Week 3:

Intro to Cartography: Students learn to both make and read maps, before embarking on a global treasure hunt!

Week 4:

Survival in Extreme Environments: Students design a shelter for a scientist working in an extreme environment on earth.

Week 5:

Ancient Wonders of the World: Students study and build replicas of famous ancient monuments, using physical and digital techniques.

Week 6:

Journey through the Solar System! Students create a model of our solar system, exploring the planets, moons, asteroid belts, and star that share our home in the universe.

Week 7:

Stargazers! Students explore the constellations of the night sky and make their own telescopes.

Week 8:

3-2-1 Lift-Off! Students design and make a working rocket with a detachable probe and parachute.

Session 2

FRI: Nov 8, 2019 - Jan 17, 2020 [4:30 - 6:00 PM]
(No class on Nov 29, Dec 27, Jan 3)

Session 3

FRI: Jan 24, 2020 - Mar 13, 2020 [4:30 - 6:00 PM]

Mother Earth Solutions

Students learn about the challenges of climate change and other environmental issues and then come up with their own solutions to solve some of the biggest issues.

Week 1:

The Puzzle of Weather: Students learn about different cloud types and the associated weather they may bring -- putting themselves in the shoes of a NASA mission team.

Week 2:

Math and Wildfires: Students learn how scientists assess wildfires using remote sensing, then use some of the same techniques to solve grade-level appropriate math problems.p>

Week 3:

Ice & Rising Sea Levels: Students observe ice melting on a solid surface near a body of water and ice melting in a body of water. Prior to the activity, students will predict what each situation will do to the level of water and then compare their prediction to what they observe.

Week 4:

Global Warming: Students learn how Earth's oceans are absorbing most of the heat being trapped on our warming world with water balloons.

Week 5:

Pollution Solutions: Students learn the chemistry of an oil spill and experiment with different methods to extract oil from water.

Week 6:

Water Resources: Students experiment with aquifers to learn how water is stored in an aquifer, how groundwater can become contaminated, and how this contamination ends up in the drinking water well.

Week 7:

Biodiversity: Building on the wildfire lesson, students learn about the importance of biodiversity and how deforestation impacts it, engaging in a fun game activity to come up with a solution as a group to help solve the problem.

Week 8:

Trash to Treasure: Students learn how to make paper from recycled paper.

Session 4

FRI: Mar 20, 2020 - May 22, 2020 [4:30 - 6:00 PM]
(No class on Apr 3, Apr 10)

Sustainable Eats

Learning all about growing food with a project-based curriculum, students create an indoor urban garden to grow food to be donated to a local food bank. The PBL approach maximizes student engagement and develops key critical thinking skills, as they work together to solve problems and achieve the goal. Students will take responsibility for, and direction of, their project, which will include building greenhouses, creating hydroponic systems, and investigating soils.
