STEM GIRLZ: STEM CORE (8 classes)

Our girls-only classes feature the best of our science labs, only with no boys allowed! Over an 8-week block, our most popular Biology and Chemistry workshops are featured alongside a taste of our Inventor/Creator Lab, and other selected STEM subjects, including Robotics, Environmental Science, Astronomy, Paleontology, and more! We provide options for single or multiple day classes. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to cover all skill levels - so, with or without experience, students are sure to be challenged! We provide engaging hands-on activities - fostering curiosity through exploration, discovery and doing. This is at the heart of what we do to inspire future scientists.

Exploring Earth & Space

In this session, girls with an adventurous spirit can explore the world as well as journey out into our solar system! They will get to grips with geography, geology, astrophysics, engineering, chemistry, and biology, as they gain an understanding of our home planet and beyond!

Week 1:

Journey to the Center of the Earth: Students create a model of earth, showing layers to the core.

Week 2:

Rocks and Minerals: Students analyze and identify different types of rocks and minerals.

Week 3:

Intro to Cartography: Students learn to both make and read maps, before embarking on a global treasure hunt!

Week 4:

Survival in Extreme Environments: Students design a shelter for a scientist working in an extreme environment on earth.

Week 5:

Ancient Wonders of the World: Students study and build replicas of famous ancient monuments, using physical and digital techniques.

Week 6:

Journey through the Solar System! Students create a model of our solar system, exploring the planets, moons, asteroid belts, and star that share our home in the universe.

Week 7:

Stargazers! Students explore the constellations of the night sky and make their own telescopes.

Week 8:

3-2-1 Lift-Off! Students design and make a working rocket with a detachable probe and parachute.

Session 2

FRI: Nov 8, 2019 - Jan 17, 2020 [4:30 - 6:00 PM]

Session 3

FRI: Jan 24, 2020 - Mar 13, 2020 [4:30 - 6:00 PM]

The Living World

Students engage in science and discovery about the living world, including learning the classification system, paleontology, and studying various living and preserved specimens throughout the course.

Week 1:

The Ecosystem: students first learn what it takes for living organisms to both survive in different environments, as well as co-exist in sometimes symbiotic ways.

Week 2:

Organism Classification: Students learn up-close and personal where various specimens in our shop exist on what is sometimes called The Tree of Life.

Week 3:

The Once Living World: a visit by our favorite paleontologist, Howell, with fossils and fun stories from the Natural History Museum!

Week 4:

Rotten Log Observations: Students observe and catalog several small insect specimens in a "rotten log" habitat.

Week 5:

Fungi & Bacteria: Students learn what bacteria and fungi are and then sent home to collect samples for study the following week.

Week 6:

Microscopic Observations of Fungi: Students return with their samples starting to grow in agar media plates, observe under microscopes and share what they learned from sample collection.

Week 7:

The Coleomegilla Maculata: Students get to observe lady beetle larvae growth over two weeks, culminating in this session where it is fully grown.

Week 8:

Dissection of Vertebrata Subphylum: Students will dissect fish specimens and make observations. (Note: if your student does not feel comfortable with dissection, please let us know and we will have them do another activity.)
