High schoolers get hands-on in chemistry with a variety of labs and experiments designed to challenge their thinking about the elements and how they react with one another! Students will learn about atomic structure, molecular compounds, stoichiometry, phase changes of matter, solutions, chemical thermodynamics and more. All of our STEM School series classes are designed to compliment state standards being taught at home.

Chemical Compounds & Periodic Table

Week 1:

Atomic Structure.
Students conduct a lab using an element called Cadmium.

Week 2:

Atomic Model Lab Activity.
Students build a 3-dimensional model of several atoms and distinguish principle energy level, sub-levels (s, p, d ,f) and orbits.

Week 3:

Operation Periodic Table.
Students will arrange 24 mystery elements into a tables according to their chemical and physical properties.

Week 4:

Ionic Compounds Properties Lab.
Students explore the properties of substance such as crystal structure, solubility, conductivity and melting point to understand types of bonding in a compound.

Week 5:

Students construct an experiment to produce and test the "perfect fizzy soda"

Week 6:

Phase Change of Ice.
Students explore and understand the three phases of matter and understand changes in potential and kinetic energy through heating or cooling of a pure substance through a phase change.

Week 7:

Students design a method of column chromatography to separate the colors used to make grape soda.

Week 8:

Chemical Thermodynamics.
Students conduct a lab on food energy and will design and build a calorimeter.
