Middle schoolers get hands-on in biology with a variety of labs and experiments designed to challenge and inspire their thinking about the living world! They'll engage in experiments each week and learn proper microscope use, how to make slides, molecule identification, cell differentiation, photosynthesis and much more! All of our STEM School series classes are designed to compliment state standards being taught at home.

Biology Experiments II
Week 1:
Cell Differentiation Lab.
Students learn to distinguish between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, mitosis and meiosis.
Week 2:
Diffusion across a Semi-permeable Membrane.
Students review the process of diffusion and explore the effect of molecule size on the molecule's ability to diffuse across a membrane.
Week 3:
Genetics and Punnett Squares.
Students learn genetics with practice problems related to incomplete dominance with Poofkins (a special kind of flower) and Goobers (a special breed of jellyfish!)
Week 4:
Pond Water Ecology.
Students make observations of organisms in a sample of local, stagnant pond water.
Week 5:
Natural Selection.
Students participate in an activity that demonstrates how natural selection works by mimicking adaptations of Darwin’s finches.
Week 6:
Fungi & Bacteria.
Students collect bacteria and fungi from their homes the prior week and then study the results under microscopes.
Week 7:
The Coleomegilla Maculata.
Students get to observe lady beetle larvae growth over two weeks, culminating in this session where it is fully grown.
Week 8:
Dissection of Vertebrata Subphylum.
Students will dissect a fish specimen and make observations. (Note: if your student does not feel comfortable with dissection, please let us know and we will have them do another activity.)
