High schoolers get hands-on in chemistry with a variety of labs and experiments designed to challenge their thinking about the elements and how they react with one another! Students will learn about atomic structure, molecular compounds, stoichiometry, phase changes of matter, solutions, chemical thermodynamics and more. All of our STEM School series classes are designed to compliment state standards being taught at home.

FRI: Sep 18, 2020 - Nov 6, 2020 [3:00 PM - 4:30 PM]

Chemical Explorations

Week 1:

Atomic Model Lab Activity- Students learn about the parts of atoms, and learn how they come together to form molecules. Students model molecules using computer software Avogadro.

Week 2:

Ionic Compounds Properties Lab- Students explore the properties of substances such as crystal structure, solubility, conductivity and melting point to understand various types of bonding in a compound.

Week 3:

Covalent Compounds

Week 4:

Stoichiomentry- Students construct an experiment to produce and test the "perfect fizzy soda".

Week 5:

Solutions - Students apply their knowledge about stoichiometry to carry out chemical reactions with solutions of known reagent concentrations.

Week 6:

Phase Changes (Ice and Dry Ice)- Students explore and understand the three phases of matter and understand changes in potential and kinetic energy through heating or cooling of a pure substance through a phase change. VSEPR and Intermolecular Forces

Week 7:

Common Lab Procedures

Week 8:

Enthalpy and Calorimetry - Students conduct a lab on energy and will design and build a calorimeter.
