Physical Science is the study of matter and energy. In the first three units of the course, students describe the atomic and molecular structure of substances using models. They will investigate how chemical reactions involve energy and lead to changes in properties of substances. They’ll model different kinds of forces and the effect they have on the motion of objects. Students solve problems involving work and power and apply these principles to simple machines. In the last three units, students investigate gravitational, electric, and magnetic force fields and identify factors that determine their strength. In addition, they apply concepts of electricity and magnetism to explain how motors, generators, and electromagnets work. Students will discuss energy transformations in objects and systems, including how heat flows between objects that are at different temperatures.

Physics expands upon the concepts introduced in Physical Science to help students understand the physical world around them. The course opens with a review of the mathematical skills needed in high school physics. Then, it quickly proceeds into classical physics, starting with mechanics, a mathematical interpretation of how the world works developed by Isaac Newton. Students then continue on to learn about waves, optics, and electromagnetism. The course also includes an optional survey of thermodynamics and more modern work in physics, including an introduction to quantum mechanics. Throughout the course, students learn to apply the concepts from the reading and lessons to the world around them through homework problems that adapt to the students’ performance and laboratories.

Lessons included in this course combine to form a comprehensive, standalone high school physics curriculum, and can also be used to can help enhance understanding of material covered in physics classes at school. Begin by exploring the basics, like the relationship between force and motion or the atomic properties of electricity and nuclear energy, before mastering more advanced areas of study. By the course's end, you might find yourself examining gravitational forces and investigating particle charge. You could even learn how to solve equations for nuclear reaction rates.
